New Delhi, May 8, 2014: A 22-year-old Delhi University student stalked a girl for six months after she turned down his proposal of marriage. Frustrated and worried, when the victim, a student of Miranda House, confronted him, he made a brazen offer: "pay up Rs.2 lakh to get rid of me" - which has finally landed him in jail.
The accused, Ujjal Pratim Hazarika, is the third-year student of Political Science at Zakir Husain College, and hails from the northeastern region - the same as the girl. Initial investigation has revealed that Hazarika duped and blackmailed several other girls using the same modus operandi.
Police sources said the boy thought he was a Casanova and he used to employ his communication skills to impress girls. "Around seven months ago, Hazarika met with the victim through a common friend at a coaching centre. He later came to know that the victim was also a third-year student of Political Science. After some meetings, he proposed her for marriage which she refused," a senior police officer of North district said.
Infuriated with the rejection, the accused started stalking her. "The victim told the police that the accused followed her when she went to a restaurant.
Initially, she thought it was only a co-incident, but her suspicion grew when she started getting phone calls from random numbers," the officer said, adding that the accused disclosed his identity when the girl once started crying over the phone.
The girl, in her complaint, said she was shocked to see him outside her hostel as she had never given him the address. "She requested him that she doesn’t want to be in any kind of relationship with him and asked him to leave. But, shockingly, the accused demanded Rs.2 lakh to stop following her, and threatened her with dire consequences if she informed the police about this," the officer said.
On the basis of her complaint, a case under sections 354-D (stalking), 384 (extortion) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC was registered against Hazarika at Timarpur police station of North Delhi. The police arrested him from his rented house in Model Town on Tuesday evening.
