Dadri lynching: Month after Akhlaq murder, cops yet to file chargesheet

Uttar Pradesh, Oct 29, 2015: It has been a month since 50-year-old Mohammad Akhlaq was beaten to death by a mob, over rumours of consuming and storing beef, at his house in Bisara village in Uttar Pradesh’s Dadri district.

Despite the arrest of some suspects, the police are yet to file a chargesheet in the case.

According to officials associated with the investigation, the statement of Akhlaq’s son Danish, the “prime witness” in the case, was crucial for the chargesheet.

Danish, who was also attacked by the mob that night, was grievously injured and had to undergo multiple surgeries.
After spending days on ventilator support, he is now recuperating at the Army Hospital.

So far, police have arrested 10 suspects in connection with the case, including a juvenile. However, the chargesheet in the case hinges on Danish’s recovery, said the police.

“Danish is a prime witness in the case…According to his doctors, he is not yet in a position to speak. But his statement is important to file the chargesheet,” said Anurag Singh, circle officer, Dadri.

Danish’s recovery has been slow, his brother Mohammad Sartaj told The Indian Express, adding, “Doctors have told us that his recovery has been 70 per cent; it will take between six months and one year for him to fully recover”.

Danish , who is still in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), is able to speak now and walk slowly, said Mohammad.

But his brother is in no position to give a statement to the police, said Sartaj. “The doctors have said that Danish should not be reminded of the incident,” he said.
