Belagavi, Dec 16, 2023: A police inspector, namely Vijay Kumar Sinnur, has been suspended in the case of a Dalit woman being thrashed, tied to a pole and stripped naked in public in Belagavi district. At least 13 people have been arrested so far in connection with the case, while the hunt is on for three more persons.

Arrested

The incident has triggered massive uproar across the southern state, with the BJP announcing a statewide protest on Saturday.

The state police department had formed an inquiry team to look into the matter, and concluded that one of the reasons behind the incident was negligence shown by inspector Sinnur.

Belagavi’s senior police officer, SN Siddaramappa, told news agency ANI that Sinnur has been suspended due to "dereliction of duty".

This came after the Karnataka High Court on Thursday (December 14) asked state police about actions taken against the local police for being unable to prevent the incident. The court sought a report on the matter from the government by Monday (December 18).

The incident happened on December 10 (Sunday) when a Dalit woman was dragged out of her house, stripped naked, tied to a pole, and thrashed by the family of a girl with whom her son had eloped.

Police said that the woman’s son was in a relationship with the girl for some time, and upon learning of the couple’s elope, the girl’s family rushed to the boy’s house before assaulting the Dalit woman.
