New Delhi, Jan 06, 2020: Election on all 70 seats of Delhi Assembly will be held in a single phase on February 8. Counting of votes will be done on February 11, Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora announced on Monday. The Model Code of Conduct has come into effect immediately, CEC Arora said. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s tenure ends on February 22 and Delhi must have a new government in place before that date. During the last Assembly elections in 2015, Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won a landslide victory pocketing 67 of 70 seats.
The Bharatiya Janata Party had got the remaining three seats and the Congress settled at nil. Delhi Assembly election is being seen as a big test for the BJP and PM Modi amid a nationwide protests over the recently passed Citizenship (Amendment) Act or CAA and National Register of Citizens (NRC). The saffron party would be hoping for a better performance in Delhi particularly after losing power in Maharashtra and Jharkhand recently.
While the AAP is going into the polls highlighting the ‘performance’ of Arvind Kejriwal government, the BJP is likely to contest without a chief ministerial face. While CAA is likely to top BJP’s agenda, the party is once again banking on PM Modi’s star appeal to woo voters in Delhi.
