New Delhi, Oct 18, 2022: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday dismissed the bail plea filed by Umar Khalid in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots case. A two-judge bench of justices Siddharth Mridul and Rajnish Bhatnagart said it did not find any merit in Khalid’s bail plea.

Umar Khalid

Umar Khalid, an activist, was a member of Jawahar Lal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) and was arrested on September 13, 2020. He is facing charges under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and several others were booked under the anti-terror law and the Indian Penal Code for allegedly being the "masterminds" of the protests and riots in Delhi’s Jamia area and in northeast Delhi in December 2019 and February 2020.

Violence had erupted in these areas during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) which left 53 people dead and over 700 injured.

The Delhi Police had charged Khalid with disrupting religious sentiments and argued that he was a part of a larger conspiracy in the riots that jolted the national capital.
