Delhi breathes easy as air quality improves, schools to reopen, few other restrictions lifted

Mangalore Today News Network

New Delhi, Nov 07, 2022: As the air quality improved in Delhi, the state government announced the reopening of schools on November 9 and lifted a few other restrictions, including curbs on the entry of trucks and small goods carrier vehicles into the national capital. Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said that the ban on private demolition and construction work will continue.

However, schools have been asked to remove outdoor activities from their routines. The state government also brought back the work-from-home policy in offices.

The environment minister also said that the ‘Paryavaran Bus Service’, which includes 500 privately-run CNG buses, will keep operating.

Delhi’s air pollution levels improved marginally on Monday but continued to remain in the ‘very poor’ category. Overall AQI recorded in the national capital was 326, according to SAFAR data. The quality of air in Delhi’s satellite cities was also in the lower end of the ‘very poor’ zone: the AQI was 332 in Noida (UP), 325 in Gurugram (Haryana), and 331 in Ghaziabad (UP).

With the pollution levels no longer in the hazardous ‘severe’ category, the Centre’s air quality panel lifted the fresh curbs under the fourth and final stage of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) imposed three days ago. Alarmed by abnormally high levels of air pollution in Delhi, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had, on Friday, stated that primary schools in Delhi would remain shut from Saturday, November 5, until the air quality in the city improved.
