New Delhi, Dec 23: The father of the Delhi gangrape survivor has appealed for calm and has said that her daughter’s tormentors deserve death penalty. As the angry protesters continued with their agitation in New Delhi on Sunday, the father of the 23-year-old paramedical student said his daughter is a "fighter" and he is confident she will "overcome all obstacles".
"I appeal to the people supporting her not to indulge in violence. I want them to support us peacefully and pray for my daughter’s recovery," he said in an interview with CNN-IBN. The father said his daughter has overcome many obstacles in life and he is sure she will overcome this one too.
"My daughter is a fighter. She has overcome many obstacles be it poverty or in her studies and she will keep fighting," he said. About his daughter’s health, he said the doctors have told him that it will take some time to fully recover. "My daughter’s health is stable. There were some complications earlier, but now she is fine. The doctors say it will take time for her to fully recover," he added.
Demanding death penalty for the accused, the rape survivor’s father said if the culprits remain alive they might again commit a similar crime. "They should be given death penalty. If they remain alive and are later freed, they will again commit such crimes. It will be injustice if they get any lesser punishment," he said in the interview.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is likely to address the nation at 12 noon on Monday, a day after he made a statement on the Delhi gangrape protests.
