Delhi students march against college girl’s shooting

New Delhi, March 9:  Hundreds of students in Delhi held a demonstration today to protest against the daylight murder of a 20-year-old.

Radhika

Radhika Tanwar was outside her college in Dhaula Kuan, South Delhi, when a man behind her shot at her. She died immediately.  It was 10.20 am and there were hundreds of people on the busy road, but the man managed to escape.  The police believe he may be living in Radhika’s neighbourhood, and had been stalking the second-year student.  So far, one young man has been questioned, but nobody has been arrested. (Read: Who killed Radhika Tanwar?).

This morning, students from the South Campus of Delhi University marched towards India Gate, demanding better safety and action in Radhika’s case.  "We just don’t feel safe," said one young woman.  Another added, "We cannot have another Radhika."

The students said they expected better conditions from a city that has a woman as its Chief Minister.  On Tuesday, Sheila Dikhsit had said, "It is a matter of shame for each one of us that the capital city of India is considered the most unsafe city... this is unacceptable to us," said Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. When asked about why women are safer in cities like Kolkata, Mrs Dikshit said, "Of course women are safe in Kolkata. It’s because of two reasons - you must remember that not only is the police there sensitive but so is society that’s also true of cities like Mumbai and Chennai."

A young protestor today said, "The chief minister said she doesn’t feel safe. But she has 10 cars following her for security. What about the rest of us?".

Ms Dikshit visited Radhika’s family at their residence in Naraina this morning. "We told her it has been 24 hours....now we want the culprit caught," said Radhika’s father.
