Denied help, she delivered twins. Died outside two hospitals

Mangalore Today /NDTV

Kolkata, Jan 12:  West Bengal’s hospitals have forced their way into the national landscape in the last few months with cases of severe negligence and inadequate facilities being reported.

Mother-twinsA new mother in Kolkata and her twins died within hours of the delivery after they were made to travel back and forth between two government hospitals.

Usha Devi, a slum dweller, went into labour last night.  She was taken by her husband to a government hospital named Chittaranjan, which refused to admit her, and referred her to another state-run hospital, Shambhunath Pandit. The first baby was delivered outside Chittaranjan Hospital. Uma Devi and her newborn were then escorted by her husband to Shambhunath Pandit Hospital, which also declined to help them, and asked them to return to the first hospital they had visited.

The second baby was delivered outside Shambhunath Hospital.  Soon after, Uma Devi and her babies died.

Sources say all three have been cremated.
