Drinking water supply to be shut for 2 days in rain-hit areas of Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Sep 05, 2022: Drinking water supply will remain shut for two days in parts of Bengaluru as the pumping station, which lifts water from the Cauvery river upwards to the city, remains submerged in Karnataka’s Mandya.

The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) pumping station, which lifts millions of litres of water upwards to Bengaluru, is now submerged under the water.

Around 50 areas of rain-hit Bengaluru will not receive drinking water for the next two days.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai will visit the TK Halli Water Supply Unit in Mandya on Monday. Officials are currently draining the water from the pumping station.

A technical team is also present at the spot to restart the machine. The unit is crucial as Cauvery water is the major source of drinking water for Bengaluru.

As parts of Bengaluru still remain inundated, two State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) teams have also been deployed to the affected places. A total of 30 areas have suffered damage from heavy rain in the last 24 hours.

Torrential rains overnight in Bengaluru have also hit traffic flow, while boats and tractors were pressed into service in certain parts.

With several lakes in the city overflowing and stormwater drains flooded, several low-lying areas bore the brunt, with water entering houses and affecting normal life.

Water-logging in localities like Rainbow Drive layout and Sunny Brooks layout on Sarjapur Road, among others, was affected to such an extent that tractors and boats were used to ferry students and office goers in the morning.

There are reports of several areas on the Outer Ring Road that house some of the IT companies being affected by rain and flooding.
