Farmers protest: 83 cops injured, 55 admitted to Delhi’s LNJP Hospital

New Delhi, Jan 26, 2021:    Eighty-three Delhi Police personnel were injured while containing the farmers’ protest in the Delhi on Tuesday and 55 of them have been admitted to the LNJP Hospital in the national capital. Sources say one of them is critical.

 

The cops sustained injuries during the violence that broke out during the farmers’ tractor rally today.

As a precautionary move, the Union home ministry has deployed additional security forces in Delhi to handle the situation. The decision was taken during a meeting of senior officials chaired by Union home minister Amit Shah on Tuesday evening.

"Additional companies of paramilitary forces are likely to be deployed in Delhi. These would be over and above 15 companies that were sent yesterday. Five companies were on standby today," news agency ANI reported quoting unnamed government sources.
Meanwhile, the police said they have removed protestors who had entered the Red Fort after they deviated from their planned route on which the tractor parade was to be taken out.

The protestors who entered the Red Fort hoisted flags at the iconic monument in the national capital.

Chaos reigned for nearly 90 minutes as some protesters, including ’Nihangs’ (traditional Sikh warriors), forced their way into the Red Fort and hoisted a flag from the staff from which the prime minister unfurls the tricolour on Independence Day.

The police later resorted to lathicharge to vacate the Red Fort premises. Continuous announcements were being made asking the protesters to leave the complex peacefully.

Earlier, the farmers had deviated from the designated route for the proposed tractor parade against the new farm laws and moved toward ITO in central Delhi.

Clashes broke out between police and protesting farmers after the latter reached ITO and tried to push towards Lutyen’s Delhi, prompting the force to use lathicharge and tear gas shells against them. The farmers began their march from different border points much before the time permitted to them for their tractor rally.

The Delhi Police had permitted the farmers protesting the three farm laws to hold their tractor parade on selected routes only after the official Republic Day parade on the Rajpath concludes.
