Prayagraj, January 19, 2025: A fire broke out at the Maha Kumbh Mela venue in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, after two gas cylinders exploded inside a tent, police said. The blaze quickly spread to nearby tents, reducing several of them to ashes.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, authorities confirmed.
Firefighters stationed at the venue as part of the event’s extensive safety arrangements swiftly reached the site and brought the fire under control. People residing in neighboring tents were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath dispatched senior officials to assess the situation and oversee relief efforts.
"Two cylinders exploded in Sector 19 of the Maha Kumbh Mela, causing a massive fire in the camps. Firefighters doused the blaze," said Bhaskar Mishra, in-charge of Akhara police station, as quoted by PTI.
The official X handle of the Maha Kumbh expressed sorrow over the incident, stating, "Very sad. The fire incident at Maha Kumbh has shocked everyone. The administration is ensuring immediate relief and rescue operations. We pray to Maa Ganga for everyone’s safety."
The Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, draws millions of devotees, making safety and emergency measures a top priority for organizers.
