Fire at cargo terminal of Delhi airport; 10 airline offices gutted

New Delhi, Jan 05, 2012:  A fire broke out at the cargo terminal of the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in the early hours today. The blaze was brought under control after over five hours. There are no reports of any casualty.

The fire erupted at about 12:45 am at the Human Resource department of Celebi, the ground handling services company, which manages operations at the airport. 35 fire tenders were present at the spot to douse the flames.   

 

 

The first floor of the cargo building which houses the offices of 10 major airlines including Air India, Gulf Air, Thai Air and Aeroflot has been gutted in the fire and the damage is estimated to run into several crores. Airport officials, however, said that there was no damage to the cargo stored in the warehouse which is part of the complex.

A spokesperson for Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) said that the fire broke out in one of the three buildings housing the import section of the cargo terminal.

Personnel at the cargo terminal initially tried to douse the flames using the fire-fighting arrangements at the complex but failed to contain the fire, police sources said. The fire brigade was informed at about 1.15 am.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
