Five Indian Navy personnel missing after avalanche in Uttarakhand

Dehradun, Oct 01, 2021: Five Indian Navy personnel, who are part of a 20-member mountaineering expedition to Mt Trishul in Uttarakhand, are missing after being caught in an avalanche.

The Indian Navy said search and rescue operations were on. Ground rescue teams and helicopters from Army, Air Force and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been pressed into action.

"Search and rescue operations for five members of the Indian Navy mountaineering expedition to Mt Trishul, caught in an avalanche near the summit camp, is being progressed by the ground rescue team and helicopters from Army, Air Force and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF)," the Indian Navy said.

The 20-member expedition was flagged off from Mumbai on September 3.

Ten climbers had started their approach on the final leg of the summit on Friday morning, but were caught in an avalanche short of the summit.

While five of the 10 climbers are safe, search operations for the remaining are in progress in coordination with the Indian Army, Indian Air Force and SDRF.
