Chandigarh, June 3, 2011: Former Haryana chief minister Bhajan Lal (80) died in a local hospital in Hissar in Haryana on Friday evening.
Lal, who was chief minister of Haryana twice, was a Member of Parliament and the patron of Haryana Janhit Congress.
Doctors said Lal suffered brain haemorrhage following a cardiac arrest. He would be cremated in his native village of Mandi Adampur on Saturday.
Lal served as Union cabinet minister at the Centre, holding the Agriculture and Environments and Forest portfolios during Rajiv Gandhi’s government. After the Congress won the 2005 elections in Haryana, Lal and his party did not see eye to eye since the Congress high command opted for incumbent chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda as the Chief Minister of the state.
In 2007, Lal officially announced he would form a new party called the Haryana Janhit Congress. Lal, who claimed to be a PhD in politics, played many masterstrokes that were crucial to the course of political developments then.
He fought the 2009 Lok Sabha poll battle from Hisar and defeated two prominent politicians of Haryana politics, Sampat Singh and Jai Parkash.
