Former governor and noted jurist M Rama Jois passes away at 88

New Delhi, Feb 16, 2021:     Former Bihar-Jharkhand governor and noted jurist Justice (Retd.) Mandagadde Rama Jois passed away at 88 on Tuesday after a period of prolonged illness, according to his family.

M Rama Jois, a former Rajya Sabha MP, had also served as the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court. He was suffering from age-related ailments, family members were quoted as saying in a PTI report.

Born on July 27, 1932, at Shivamogga, M Rama Jois did his BA and Law degree. He was associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) from the beginning.

Several leaders including Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, BJP national president JP Nadda and Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa expressed grief over the legal luminary’s demise.

Amit Shah said, “My condolences on the passing away of a noted jurist and former governor of Bihar & Jharkhand, Justice M Rama Jois Ji. He made a lasting contribution to Indian judiciary. His efforts in restoring democracy during the 1975 emergency will always be remembered. Om Shanti.”
Meanwhile, Nirmala Sitharaman praised Justice M Rama Jois for being a “great mind”. She said, “Justice (Retd) Shri. Rama Jois is no more. He had served as Chief Justice of Punjab & Haryana High Court. Also was a member of the Rajya Sabha. His book ‘The Legal and Constitutional History of India’ is a treatise. His ‘Dharma: the Global Ethic’ is a classic. A great mind.”Calling it a colossal loss to society, JP Nadda said, “The passing away of Justice M Rama Jois is a colossal loss to the society. He served selflessly for the nation and left his deep imprints on Judiciary, Executive & legislative fields. Condolences to his family, friends & supporters. Om Shanti.”

In a tweet, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa said, "Deeply saddened by the demise of Sri Rama Jois, a retired judge. He had also served as a governor and a Rajya Sabha MP. I pray to God to give his family strength to bear the loss. May his soul rest in peace. Om Shanti.”

Condoling the death, Karnataka Minister for Primary and Secondary Education S Suresh Kumar said in a tweet: "Justice M Rama Jois is no more. He passed away at 7.30 am today. May his soul rest in peace.”
