Bangalore June 7, 2012 : Four people have reportedly been arrested in connection with the murder of Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS) officer SP Mahantesh. According to police sources, a senior government official is suspected to have hired people to attack Mr Mahantesh, who was a whistle-blower in a cooperative housing scam case, and had ordered an inquiry into the alleged irregularities.
Mr Mahantesh, 48, was attacked on May 15, and died five days later at a private hospital due to a cardiac arrest. The police had formed a special team to track down Mr Mahantesh’s attackers.
The Karnataka government official was working as Deputy Director of the Audit wing in the state’s Cooperative department and had reported irregularities in different societies involving officials and politicians. According to sources, he was warned against probing into a cooperative society scandal.
Mr Mahantesh was the second Karnataka government official to be killed in an assault last month. An Assistant Conservator of Forest, Madan Naik was assaulted by a group of tourists at Dandeli in Uttara Kannada district on May 6 after he objected to them feeding crocodiles at a private resort. The government has ordered a CID probe into his death and the police had arrested six people in the case.
