26-year-old Naina Rani was cremated by her family on December 15 in Patiala. However, according to a report in Times of India, the ’dead’ woman returned home unscathed and healthy in a few days.

Naina had gone missing on December 8. Local police found a body in a gunny bag on December 11. Naina’s family identified the body to be hers and performed last rites.

Apparently the woman’s face had been mutilated, which is why Naina’s family mistook the deceased to be their daughter, Hindustan Times reported. The family alleged that Naina, who was married and lived in Rupnagar district, had eloped with her paramour.  They also alleged that it was this man, a truck driver, who had killed their daughter.

However, their theories were stumped when both the woman and the man she had eloped with, returned home.

Police have now reopened investigation of the case as the identity of the woman cremated instead of Naina and the circumstances under which the mix-up occurred remain unclear.

However, autopsy confirmed that the cremated woman had indeed been killed by strangulation.
