Bangalore, Aug 7, 2013: An entire family of four — a couple and two young sons — was killed on the spot after being knocked down and run over by a speeding lorry near the Nayandahalli Ring Road junction on Wednesday evening.
Traffic police suspect that the brakes of the lorry malfunctioned and caused the accident. They add that brake inspectors from the Road Transport Department are yet to examine the vehicle and give a report regarding the brake failure.
The deceased have been identified as Siddaraju, 38, who worked as a flower decorator in the city, his wife Shantamma, 28 and their two sons – Shivaraj, three, and Yogi, one. The family, a resident of Vinayaka Nagar, Adugodi, was returning home from Siddaraju’s native village when the accident occurred.
As the bike neared the Nayandahalli Ring Road junction, a speeding vehicle hit it from behind. Traffic police said Siddaraju lost control over the lorry and the impact of the collision was such that all four fell from the bike.
Before they could recover and react, the canter had run over all four, killing them on the spot. Eyewitness accounts recount that the bodies were strewn across the road. The bike was smashed to pieces by the impact of the accident.
The lorry further rammed into a Maruti Omni van in front of the bike, before coming to a halt abruptly. The van rammed into an under-construction metro pillar. Two people travelling in the van were also injured in the accident. The lorry driver fled the scene after the accident.
Byatarayanapura Traffic police soon rushed to the spot. Two cranes were used to clear the smashed vehicles from the road.
Byatarayanapura Traffic police have registered a case and are further investigating the case.
