Bangalore, Aug 09, 2014: Young Shubha Harini’s dreamt to be a dancer , but she now lies in Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital, her legs crushed by a thoughtlessly driven BMTC bus.
Shubha, who turns 10 Aug 6, was on her way to school on Aug 5 when she came under the wheels of the bus near Cantonment railway station in Bangalore. Around 8am, Shubha and her sister Janani, a class 10 student, were boarding Route No. 292 to reach Infant Jesus School in Lingarajapuram. Janani hopped on, but the bus began moving as Shubha tried to get in. She fell to the ground and the bus ran over her legs.
Doctors say she may need multiple surgeries. "Her right leg is seriously injured. As of now, there’s no question of amputation. The treatment mode will be charted out by the treating doctors. BMTC authorities visited the hospital and said they will bear the treatment cost. She is recovering," Dr MD Marker, medical director of the hospital, told media.
Shubha, a class 5 student, is the younger daughter of Palani Velu, an RT Nagar resident and NGO worker. A shaken Janani, recounting the incident before reporters in hospital, said Shubha aspires to be a dancer. Police have booked a case of negligence against the bus driver.
BMTC chief traffic manager (operations) Veeregowda GN told TOI: "The bus was going from KR Market to K Narayanapura in East Bangalore. The driver has been questioned and an internal inquiry ordered. As of now, his duty and pay perks are suspended. If he’s found guilty, he could be dismissed from his job. We’ve spoken to the hospital authorities and will foot the girl’s medical costs."
