New Delhi, Dec 17, 2021: Ahead of next year’s Goa Assembly election, BJP MLA Alina Saldanha on Thursday resigned from the state Assembly as well as from the party, saying that the party has "forgotten all its principles".

Alina Saldanha, 69, submitted her resignation at the Goa Assembly Speaker’s office.

"I resigned because the party that late Mathany Saldanha had joined, & after his demise I stepped into his shoes, is no longer the same. It seems to have forgotten all its principles & there’s bedlam in the state," news agency ANI quoted Alina Saldanha as saying.

In 2012, Alina Saldanha contested the by-election on a BJP ticket from Cortalim Assembly segment, which fell vacant after the death of her husband Mathany Saldanha. Alina Saldanha won the by-election.

Alina Saldanha also won the 2017 Assembly election on the BJP’s ticket.

Amid speculations of her joining the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Alina Saldanha said she has not taken any decision yet.

“All parties are in touch with me. I have to think, I have to consult...no matter who tries to persuade me, I will weigh the pros and cons. I will consult with the people of my constituency,” PTI quoted Alina Saldanha as saying.

Apart from Alina Saldanha, four other MLAs of different parties have resigned from the 40-member House recently. These include Luizinho Faleiro and Ravi Naik of Congress, Jayesh Salgaonkar of Goa Forward Party, and Rohan Khaunte, an independent MLA.
