New Delhi, Oct 29, 2023: If you type ‘Bharat’ on the search box of Google Maps, it now shows as a “Country in South Asia" along with the Indian flag digital code. Irrespective of whether you use Google Maps in Hindi or English, searching “Bharat" will yield the same result that Google shows for “India". Both “India" and “Bharat" are now recognised as a “Country in South Asia" and Google Maps users can use either “Bharat" or “India" to see the official Indian map.

Google

In the Hindi version of Google Maps, Google shows “भारत", on the other hand, if you are using English language then the search results for “India" are shown. As far as the text description is concerned, it is similar both in Hindi and English languages. At a time when the central government is slowly using “Bharat" instead of “India" in official communications, Google seems to be doing its homework.

Not just Google Maps, in fact, across products like Search, Translator, News among others, Google is offering users the option to use both “Bharat" and “India" to get similar results. While there is now official word from Google on this yet, a simple search reveals the changes Google may have made in the background.

Recently, in a first, a railway ministry proposal to the Union Cabinet has reportedly dropped “India" and replaced it with “Bharat" in its entire content.

Especially for Google users in India, if you minutely observe in Hindi language, Google is now preferring to use “भारत" instead of “इंडिया". Also, the English to Hindi translation always showcased India in English and “भारत" in Hindi. Google translate also offers other nouns for “India" as “हिंदुस्तान" and “भारतवर्ष".

A new change seems to be rolling out gradually to users and it may take some time for all users to see it.
