New Delhi, Nov 15, 2016: The government on Tuesday decided to declare controversial TV evangelist Zakir Naik’s non-profit ,organisation as unlawful under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
A home ministry official said a notification declaring the Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) as an unlawful association will be issued soon.
This means that one cannot become a member or office bearer, hold meetings or collect funds for the foundation. A ban under UAPA is valid for five years.
The decision to declare the IRF, which has been under the scanner for months, as unlawful was approved by the cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, sources said.
Hindustan Times had first reported on August 8 that the government was planning such a move following a concurring opinion from the Attorney General of India.
Currently said to be in west Asia, Naik faces allegations of influencing a terrorist killed in the July 1 Dhaka siege through his sermons. Bangladesh banned his Peace TV, saying it incited the attack in which 22 people were gunned down.
