Govt to extend Aadhaar deadline till December 31

New Delhi, Aug 30 2017, DH News : A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court is likely to hear all Aadhaar related matters in the first week of November. Centre informed the apex court that it will extend till December 31 the deadline to furnish Aaadhar to avail benefits of social welfare schemes.


Aadhaar_A bench presided over by Chief Justice Dipak Misra said all these cases would be put for consideration in November after senior advocate Shyam Divan sought urgent hearing on PILs challenging the Centre’s decision to link various welfare schemes with Aadhaar.

Attorney General K K Venugopal submitted the deadline for linking the schemes has already been extended to December 31. He said the matter could be referred to a five-judge Constitution bench.

The petitioners wanted adjudication of the matters pertaining to validity of Aadhaar in the light of privacy judgement delivered on last Thursday.

The nine-judge bench had in six separate and concurring judgements held right to privacy as a fundamental right. Only Justice R F Nariman had said that the matter should be put before a three-judge bench.
