Ahmedabad, August 01: Anandiben Patel on Monday resigned as the Gujarat Chief Minister. The move, agencies say, comes following the statewide protests triggered off by the assault on four Dalit youths by a cow vigilante group.
In a Facebook post, she wrote that she had sought to quit the party two months back so that there is enough time for her replacement to prepare the state for important events like the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat summit.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has been considering replacing the Gujarat chief minister. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah want to craft a new strategy to ensure that the party retains their home state in assembly elections next year.
Reports say that Patel will be appointed as a state governor to make place for a new chief minister.
In the post, she also mentioned that it was better to step down as she will turn 75 in November.
