Ahmedabad, Sept 06, 2013 : To scuttle a bandh called by the Congress, around 100 party workers across Gujarat were detained on Friday. The Congress had called for a shutdown over suspended IPS officer DG Vanzara’s controversial letter criticising chief minister Narendra Modi.
The Congress also lashed out against the Gujarat government’s failure to appoint a Lokayukta.
Meanwhile, police sources said more than a dozen incidents of stone pelting have been reported from across the state cities even as NSUI workers allegedly forced a few colleges to shut down in Ahmedabad and Rajkot.
The Congress, on the other hand, alleged that the Gujarat government would resort to high- handedness to foil the shut down.
Police sources also added that Congress workers reportedly torched two public buses in Ahmedabad.
The state government has asked all district administrations to take stringent measures against anyone resorting to violence during the bandh.
Vanzara, an accused in a string of alleged fake encounter killing cases, has accused Modi of abandoning him and other officials despite the fact that they were merely implementing the conscious policy of "zero tolerance" towards terrorism of the state government.
The letter came as a major embarrassment for the BJP and Narendra Modi who is pitching for a national role.
