Rohtak, Jun 25, 2016: About 7,000 girl students in the state are attending schools with either non-functional toilets or no toilets at all. As per the data collected by National University of Educational Planning and Administration, 85 schools (all girls’ and co-education) in the state have no toilet facility for girls, while at another 51 schools the toilets built for girls are not in a working condition.
Among the districts, Mewat leads the chart with 14 schools in the district without toilet facility for girls, while Panipat comes second with 10 schools in the district without girls’ toilet. The data further reveals that in over 22,000 schools in the state, 2,546 toilets built for girls are not in a working condition. Besides 7,000 girl students, the problem is also for over 250 female teachers who teach at these schools.
Besides, at over 4,500 schools in the state where there is a toilet facility for students, there is no hand-washing facility available near the toilets.
Although the state has significantly improved by coming down to 85 schools without girls’ toilets from last year’s 419, it has a long way ahead considering the large strength of girl students still forced to attend schools without the basic facility.
The schools in the state are also facing a dearth of teaching staff and leadership. According to the data, over 17,000 schools in the state are functioning without a head master. The number has gone up by 600 from last year. Also, at 188 schools in the state, there is not even a single teacher available to teach students, while there is only one teacher at 1,075 schools in the state.
