Heavy rain lashes Andhra Pradesh as Cyclone Asani approaches

Visakhapatnam, May 11, 2022: Cyclone Asani changed track significantly and is now likely to touch the Andhra Pradesh coast between Kakinada and Visakhapatnam, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday, issuing a “red” warning for the Andhra coast.

The IMD predicted moderate rainfall in most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy rain is likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh and heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely over coastal Odisha and adjoining coastal West Bengal on Wednesday.

While on Thursday, moderate rainfall is likely at a few places with heavy rainfall at isolated places over coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal.

 


Cyclone Asani weakened into a Cyclonic Storm and lay centered about 60 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 180 km south-southwest of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), 310 km southwest of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) at 02.30 am on May 11.

According to the IMD, the weather system is likely to recurve slowly north-northeastwards, move along Yanam, Kakinada and Visakhapatnam coasts and emerge into westcentral and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts.

It is likely to gradually weaken into a Cyclonic Storm by May 11 morning and into a depression by the morning of May 12.

Meanwhile, several trains have been cancelled and many others rescheduled due to the cyclone. As many as 9 SDRF and 9 NDRF teams have been deployed for relief operations in Andhra.

The weather department has also warned fishermen against venturing into the sea till May 13.
