At least two people were washed away in Hyderabad after drains overflowed in the wake of the torrential rain, ACP K Purushottam told news agency ANI. Search operations are underway to rescue them.

Life has come to a standstill in the city, where lanes and roads were submerged due to the incessant downpour, with low-lying areas under several feet of rainwater. A video shared by ANI showed a tempo truck being washed away in the Old city area last night.

Rainwater also entered an eatery in Old city area, where patrons and people taking shelter from the rain were sitting in ankle-deep water.Vehicular movement has been badly affected in many parts of the city, while pedestrians have no choice but to wade across waterlogged streets, as seen in Vanasthalipuram.

The Enforcement, Vigilance and Disaster (EVDM) wing of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) issued an alert on Twitter, urging people to take precautions during their commute.

Almost all the areas under GHMC, Rangareddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts including Begumpet, Ameerpet, Somajiguda, Banjara Hill and Jubilee Hills, Amberpet, Nampally, old Malakpet, Yakutpura, LB Nagar, and Vanasthalipuram received heavy downpour.

Heavy rain is expected to continue over Hyderabad on Saturday, with the city’s mayor advising people to remain indoors.

“Heavy rainfall is expected to continue over the city. Monsoon emergency teams are on the field. Citizens are advised to stay indoors unless needed. Dial @GHMCOnline control room on 040-21111111, 040-29555500 for any rain-related issues and assistance,” GHMC mayor Vijayalaxami Gadwal said in a tweet.
