Helmet rule: Bengaluru govt earns Rs 65 lakh from 64,332 violations in a week

Bengaluru, January 29, 2016: As many as 64,332 cases were booked against two-wheeler riders, who violated the pillion rider helmet rule in the last one by the Bengaluru traffic police.

helmet.jA fine amount of Rs 64.33 lakhs was collected from the offenders.

The Karnataka government made it mandatory for pillion riders, including children, to wear helmets in Bengaluru last week. The same rule will be extended to the rest of the state from February 1, in accordance with a directive from the Supreme Court.

According to the police, Bengaluru witnesses an average of 6 accidents of two-wheelers every day on the congested roads. On Thursday, another helmet-less two-wheeler died after being hit by a vehicle from behind. The police have undertaken a major awareness campaign after wearing helmets was made mandatory.
