Kumbakonam, Dec 07, 2022: The leader of a Tamil pro-Hindu group was arrested in Kumbakonam on Tuesday night for putting up a poster depicting a saffronised BR Ambedkar. The poster shows BR Ambedkar wearing a saffron shirt with holy ash on his forehead.
The arrested leader has been identified as the Kumbakonam district secretary of the Hindu Makkal Katchi, Gurumurthy. This comes after Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader and MP, Thol Thirumavalavan tweeted an image of the poster, condemning it.

Thirumavalavan said that the poster saffronised Ambedkar who refused to pray to Vishnu or Brahma. “Such religious fanatics who portrayed Ambedkar with a saffron shirt and holy ash on his forehead should be arrested immediately,” Thirumavalavan wrote.
However, a leader from the Hindu Makkal Katchi said that the group had saffronised BR Ambedkar to create awareness.
“Ambedkar was a saffron lover as he embraced Buddhism, of which saffron is the symbol. We saffronised Ambedkar to create awareness against Thirumavalavan trying to Periyarise Ambedkar,” said Hindu Makkal Katchi leader, Arjun Sampath.
Gurumurthy, the Kumbakonam district secretary of the Hindu Makkal Katchi, was arrested for the incident and booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
