New Delhi, April 10, 2012 : A Delhi Police constable has died and another has been injured after a Mercedes, allegedly being driven at high speed, ran them over in New Delhi’s Paschim Vihar area a little after 1 am today.
The two police constables, 39-year-old Deepak Singh Chauhan and 24-year-old Amit Kumar, were on night patrolling on a motorcycle when they were hit from behind. Mr Chauhan, a father of two, died by the time help arrived; Mr Kumar suffered injuries to his leg.
The accused, a businessman named Gurdeep Singh, had fled from the accident site but was later tracked down to his house as eyewitnesses had taken down the licence plate number of the car.
During interrogation, Mr Singh, has reportedly said he fell asleep while he was driving and did not see the cops in front of him. An alcohol test conducted on him has been found to be negative. Mr Singh is a resident of Greater Kailash-1, a posh locality in South Delhi. He also owns two restaurants in malls in South Delhi and Gurgaon.
Mr Singh has been booked for death due to negligence, a non-bailable offence which carries a maximum punishment of two years and fine. He has also been booked for rash and negligent driving.
