Ernakulam, Jan 18, 2023: A hotel in Kerala’s Ernakulam was shut down and its licence was suspended after 68 people who had recently eaten there were admitted to different hospitals over food poisoning. The eatery in question was identified as Hotel Majlis in Ernakulam’s Paravur area and the incident occurred on Monday.
The people who were admitted to the hospital had consumed al-faham and Mandi, two popular Arabic dishes from the hotel. Most of them developed vomiting, diarrhoea, body pain and uneasiness after eating the food.
Health Minister Veena George had instructed the Food Safety Commissioner to conduct an immediate inspection and submit a report after the incident came into the limelight. The action of suspending the licence was based on this report. Recently, a nurse working at the Kottayam medical college died after consuming a dish from the eatery.
Meanwhile, the food safety department has conducted inspections at 189 restaurants across the state and the licences of two have been cancelled. "Notices have been issued to 37 restaurants for lack of cleanliness," the minister’s office said.
Incidents of food poisoning have been reported in various parts of the state in the recent past. The Food Safety department has been conducting inspections of hotels and restaurants in Kerala after these incidents.
On Tuesday, the Food Safety Department inspected a total of 189 establishments. Two of the establishments working in unhygienic conditions and without licences were shut down.
