Abdul Majid, 21, posed as a young girl and befriended as many as 200 young women from the top schools and colleges in the city. His female Facebook personas suggested a loyal and inquisitive friend, who disclosed sexual encounters and sought similar information.

Then, the police says, Mr Majid, who was arrested yesterday, would demand that the women send him money - or nude photos. If not, the third-year Computer Science student warned that he would dump their secrets online.

Eight young women were bullied into sending him photos of themselves naked. One young woman, who did not wish to be identified, paid him Rs. 86,000.

"Hundreds of private pictures of victims have been found in the mobile phone of the accused," said a police statement.

Mr Majid’s real identity was unraveled when a student he stalked, Janani Prabhu, complained to her mother, who went to the police.

"It is so important for parents and youngsters to be aware. The child must be able to approach the parent and confide if something like this happens," says Shweti Prabhu, explaining why she decided to not just seek police assistance, but publicly discuss her daughter’s online encounter.

"Such dangers are lurking online. Schools must bring in cyber experts to teach youngsters how to be safe online," said CV Anand, the police commissioner of Cyberabad, who led the investigation.
