How a Pune hotel staff led police to arrest Bunty Chor

Pune, Jan 27, 2013 : The man who has carried out more than 500 thefts in India, Devinder Singh alias Bunty Chor, was arrested from a Pune hotel on Republic Day morning not only because of his hurry to enter his room, but also due to an alert hotel staff who had watched him on TV.

According to Balgovind Tripathi, manager of Sai Executive Hotel in Narpatgiri Chowk, Pune, the man wearing a cap checked in at 2:45 am in an auto and showed his driving licence with the name Devinder Singh as identity proof.

The hotel staff demanded Rs 1400 as advance, and Bunty gave them Rs 2000. He didn’t even demand a receipt and was only in a hurry to go into his room (Room no 202), says the manager.

There were three hotel staff on night duty at that time. All three of them told this correspondent that they had seen the face on India TV  in its report on the Thiruvananthapuram burglary.

The hotel staff discussed among themselves, and the moment the man took off his cap inside his room, their suspicions were confirmed.

The manager and the hotel staff immediately informed the Police crime Branch, and within minutes the police arrived at Room 202.

A team of Kerala policemen immediately reached Pune to take custody of Bunty. 

The car stolen from Kerala NRI businessman was found in Tamil Nadu,  but the entire cash that was stolen is yet to be recovered, says police.

PTi adds: Kerala Home Minister Thiruvanchur Radhakrishnan said the state would initiate legal steps to get Devinder in custody.

“His last criminal deed was in Kerala. So we have a legal ground to seek him in custody. Our investigators would take up this with Maharashtra police,” he said.

City police Commissioner P Vijayan said Devinder was under preventive arrest in Samarth police station in Pune and he was being interrogated.

Wanted in connection with scores of cases acorss the country, Devinder broke into the house of an affluent NRI here on Jan 21 and drove off in a luxury car parked outside.

He gained entry by breaking its hi-tech security systems like surveillance camera and intruder warning alarm.

The car he stole was found abandoned in Krishnagiri in Tamil Nadu a few days back.
