Bengaluru, Dec 22 2017 : A Delhi-based elderly couple, who used a novel method to smuggle gold from Dubai, was arrested on Wednesday by customs officials at the Kempegowda International Airport.
Sleuths recovered eight gold biscuits weighing 993 grams and worth Rs 27 lakh from Jugal Kishor (63), having found out that his wife, Radha Rani (64), had brought the gold to India. They later arrested the couple.
Based on a tip-off, customs officials intercepted Radha soon after she landed in Bengaluru from Dubai on an Air India flight via Goa.
During the interrogation, she confessed she had carried gold biscuits from Dubai and kept them concealed in seat no 17C.
When the flight arrived in Goa, Kishor boarded as a domestic passenger and collected the gold to disembark at Bengaluru. As someone traveling only on the domestic leg of the trip, he need not undergo customs’ check.
When they checked the couple thoroughly, Kishor revealed he was carrying eight gold biscuits in concealed pockets in his trousers.
Separate cases
In another incident, officials, on December 13, detained three passengers trying to smuggle gold biscuits, weighing 1.2 kg, in their rectum.
The accused - Korambra Meetal Jamsheer (29), Naushad Shareef (34) and Unni Chelapurath (26) - arrived at KIA from Kuala Lumpur by an Air Asia flight.
Based on profiling by the airport customs officers, the passengers were detained and interrogated.
When the officers ran a body check, it was found that they had concealed 400 grams of gold biscuits each in their rectum, totally weighing 1.2 kg. The value of the seized gold is Rs 35.34 lakh in the international market.
In a separate case, customs officials detained a passenger, Sayed Shihab Tangal, a resident of Mangaluru, for smuggling cigarettes on December 17. Tangal had cigarettes and cosmetics more than the allowed commercial quantity, valued at Rs 3 lakh.
The merchandise was detained and further investigations are under way.
