Human-animal conflict: Kerala sees three deaths in wild elephant attack

Thiruvananthapuram, February 11, 2025: Three deaths in man-animal conflicts have been reported in Kerala, triggering strong protests.

While a 45-year-old woman was killed in a wild elephant attack at Idukki district on Monday evening, a 45-year-old man was killed in a wild elephant attack in Wayanad.

At Palode on the suburbs of Thiruvananthapuram the body of a man missing over the last few days was found in the forest. He was suspected to be killed in a wild elephant attack.

The incidents have further triggered protests against man-animal conflicts in the state. Forest minister A K Saseendran told the state assembly that the forest department was making all out efforts to curb man-animal conflicts.

Idukki Peruvanathanam native Sophiya was trampled to death by a wild elephant on Monday evening near her house. Sophiya and her family had been constantly complaining to the forest authorities about the wild animal menace of the region.

Maanu of Noolpuzha near Sulthan Bathery in Wayanad was killed in a wild elephant attack on Monday night. The incident occurred while he was returning home after work. According to an eye witness, three elephants were spotted in the region. One of the elephants attacked Maanu.

Body of Babu of Palode on the suburbs of Thiruvananthapuram and found in the forest areas of Kulathupuzha. Forest officials suspect that he was trampled to death by a wild elephant. He was reported missing over the last few days.
