Police said they received the distress call at around 7.45 pm, after which a PCR van reached the house and took her body to a nearby hospital, where she was declared brought in dead.

Manjula, a civil engineer pursuing a PHD in water resources, had earlier worked in the US for a short stint and returned to study at the IIT. Originally from Indore, Manjula lived in the apartment with her husband and family members. At the time of the incident, they were not in the campus.

Police did not find a suicide note in the hostel room. Manjula’s friend told police that she did not suspect she would commit suicide. Police were told that she looked happy and had recently submitted a paper. Police said they are awaiting post mortem report.

Police said the door of the room was open through which someone spotted her hanging from the ceiling fan. Police said the sub-divisional magistrate has been informed of the death as the woman was married in 2013. SDM has to be roped in by the police in such cases if a deceased had been married for less than seven years.
