IPS officer on probation caught cheating in civil services exam, held in Chennai

Chennai, Oct 31, 2017 : Safeer Karim, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer on probation, was allegedly caught cheating in a civil services test conducted at the Presidency Girls Higher Secondary School in Chennai on Monday.

The accused, who has been arrested, faces dismissal from the force because he was still under probation when the incident occurred.

An assistant superintendent of police posted at Tirunelveli, Karim wanted to rise up in the ranks and join the Indian Administrative Service. The alleged fraud was detected while he was appearing for the main civil services examinations.

Sources said the accused was using a Bluetooth device to procure answers from his wife during a general studies test when he was caught by a Union Public Service Commission squad. He has been booked for cheating under the Indian Penal Code as well as relevant sections of the IT Act-2003.

Karim successfully cleared the civil services examination in 2014. He was undergoing training at Nanguneri subdivision of Tirunelveli.

Chennai police have also sought the cooperation of their Hyderabad counterparts to arrest Karim’s wife. His arrest was confirmed by Chennai police commissioner AK Viswanathan.
