Tamilnadu, May 23, 2024: Music Maestro and Rajya Sabha MP Ilaiyaraaja issued a legal notice to the producers of ’Manjummel Boys’, Soubin Shahir, Babu Shahir and Shawn Antony, over copyright violation. His legal team accused the team of unauthorised use of Ilaiyaraaja’s iconic ’Kanmani Anbodu’ song from Kamal Haasan’s ’Gunaa’ at a crucial point in the film. The Malayalam film, directed by Chidambaram, was hailed for the usage of the song in the climax.
Ilayaraaja has claimed copyright infringement and has sought the producers to seek proper permission from him to continue the usage of the song in the film or remove it.
’Manjummel Boys’ is a film based on a real-life incident about a group of friends saving one of theirs who fell into a deep fissure in the Guna caves in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu.
The use of ‘Kanmani Anbodu Kaadhalan’ comes at a crucial point in the film. Guna Caves in Kodaikanal got its name after Kamal Haasan’s ’Gunaa’ was shot there in 1990. The Malayalam film evoked nostalgia among the Tamil and Telugu audience and became a blockbuster.
’Manjummel Boys’ earned over Rs 200 crore at the box office worldwide, along with critical acclaim from all quarters.
Earlier, Ilaiyaraaja had also issued a notice to Sun Pictures after the release of Rajinikanth-starrer ‘Coolie’ promo over the usage of one of his songs.
For the unaware, Ilaiyaraaja has been vocal about his fight against copyright infringement cases.
