In Kerala ’love jihad’ case, NIA to submit 4th status report on Hadiya’s marriage

Kerala,Jan 18, 2018 : The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is all set to file the fourth status report in the Hadiya case. The Supreme Court is scheduled to next hear the case on January 23.

 

In the last hearing, the NIA had alleged that before their marriage, Shafin Jahan, Akhila alias Hadiya’s husband, was in touch with men from ISIS.

The agency had informed the Supreme Court that two ISIS suspects have confessed to the anti-terror probe agency that Akhila/Hadiya’s husband was in touch with them.

Sources said that Manseed Mehmood, 30, of Kannur and Safvan, alias Rayyan, of Tirur, were questioned for a few hours at the Viyyur central prison. The interrogation was done on inputs that Jahan was a member of a WhatsApp group that was propagating extremism.

Both Manseed and Safvan are accused in the Omar-al-Hindi case -- a Facebook group dealing with activities of SDPI, the political arm of Popular Front of India. The case pertains to a conspiracy by ISIS-inspired groups to target judges, police officers and political leaders in south India.

The NIA probe has so far found that Jahan was in touch with Manseed and Safvan through Muneer, a common friend who is known to Sainaba, Hadiya’s court-appointed guardian.

The NIA has also been probing a possible case of ’love jihad’ in the marriage of Hadiya and Shafin Jahan.

Sources said that the fourth status report will be on the same lines as what the NIA had stated earlier with regard to inter-religious love marriages.

The Supreme Court has remained silent on Shafin Jahan’s appeal against the annulment of his marriage to Akhila. Their marriage was annulled by the Kerala High Court in December 2016 after Hadiya’s father Ashokan KM alleged that his daughter was being indoctrinated and stood at a risk of being taken to territories of Islamic State in Iraq and Syria by extremist Islamic outfits.

The Supreme Court in November last year had allowed Hadiya, who was put under her parents’ custody since her marriage was annulled by the High Court, to resume her studies at a homeopathy college in Tamil Nadu’s Salem district.

Born as Akhila, she converted to Islam and changed her name to Hadiya before marrying Jahan.

As the controversy over the ’love jihad’ case rages, the court is expected to schedule the next hearing in the coming week. So far over 30 people have been questioned in the case.
