India-China relation will be impacted if peace in border areas is disturbed: EAM Jaishankar

Mangalore Today News Network

Bengaluru, Aug 13, 2022: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday said that the relationship between India and China will be impacted if China disturbs peace and tranquillity in border areas. "Our relationship is not normal, it cannot be normal as the border situation is not normal," PTI quoted Jaishankar as saying.

Jaishankar was addressing the media in Bengaluru and answering a question on the troubled relationship with China after the clash in Ladakh two years ago.

The minister added that the big problem is the border situation and the Indian military has been holding its ground for two years. "We have made substantial progress in pulling back from places where we are very close," said Jaishankar.

He added that the situation is tense as the positioning of the two armies is very close. "It also could be a dangerous situation, so we are having talks," the minister said.

In its first reaction to the tension between China and Taiwan, India, without naming either of the countries, said it is concerned over the developments and campaigned for efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region.

External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, "We urge the exercise of restraint, avoidance of unilateral actions to change status quo, de-escalation of tensions and efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region."

Tension between China and Taiwan is at an all-time-high following the visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan. Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan was followed by high-level military drills by China. The Taiwanese government has alleged that China used military exercises as a practice to attack the country in future.
