New Delhi, Aug 11, 2023: The central government issued an advisory for the Indian nationals in the African country of Niger on Friday. The citizens are asked to leave the country ’as soon as possible.’
Addressing the media, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, "Government of India is closely monitoring ongoing developments in Niger. In light of the prevailing situation, Indian nationals whose presence is not essential are advised to leave the country as soon as possible."
"They may bear in mind that airspace is currently closed. When departing through land border, utmost precautions may be taken to ensure safety and security. Those who may be planning travel to Niger in the coming days are also similarly advised to reconsider their travel plans until the situation normalizes..," he added.
When asked how many Indian citizens are there in Niger, the minister said, "around 250 are there."
He further said, "We want all of them to register. We have been told that they are safe. Our embassy is trying to facilitate logistics for them to leave the country."
Bagchi further noted that the airspace is shut and that it is difficult to travel through land borders. "But we are doing all we can," he added.
The ministry further emphasised that those who are planning to travel to Niger, are advised to reconsider their travel plans until the situation normalises.
"Indian nationals are advised to register themselves at the Indian mission," the MEA said.
