India reports 22,775 new Covid-19 cases, highest after 275 day

New Delhi, Jan 01, 2022: India saw a sharp spike in the number of Covid-19 cases on Saturday. As many as 22,775 new Covid-19 cases -- the highest after 275 days -- were reported in the country in the last 24 hours. These fresh cases have pushed the overall caseload to 3,48,61,579.

Saturday’s Covid-19 tally was 35.9 per cent higher than that reported by the Union health ministry on Friday.

On October 3 (275 days ago), India had reported 22,842 cases.

Meanwhile, 406 people succumbed to the infection in the last 24 hours, taking the toll to 4,81,486. The maximum casualties were reported in Kerala (353), followed by Tamil Nadu with 11 daily deaths.

The top five states which registered the maximum cases are Maharashtra with 8,067 cases, followed by West Bengal with 3,451 cases, Kerala with 2,676 cases, Delhi with 1,796 cases and Tamil Nadu with 1,155 cases.

As many as 75.28 per cent of the new cases are reported from these five states, with Maharashtra alone responsible for 35.42 per cent of the new cases.

Besides, India’s active cases increased by 13,420 in the last 24 hours. The active caseload in the country now stands at 1,04,781.

Meanwhile, India’s recovery rate reached 98.32 per cent even as a total of 8,949 patients recovered in the last 24 hours.
