Balasore (Orissa), March 11, 2011: India on Friday successfully test fired two indigenous nuclear-capable missiles – Prithvi II and Dhanush – off the Orissa coast. A defence official said the Prithvi II surface-to-surface ballistic missile with a range of 350 km was launched at about 10.50 am from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, about 230 km east of Bhubaneswar. Dhanush, a naval version of Prithvi with equivalent range, was launch from a naval warship anchored off the Puri coast at about 10.30 am.
“Both were launched with 100 % success,” said ITR director SP Das.
India’s first indigenously built ballistic missile, Prithvi has a flight duration of 483 seconds reaching a peack altitude of 43.5 km with a warhead load of 500 kg.
One of the five missiles being developed under the country’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP), Prithvi uses advanced inertia guidance system with menoeuvering trajectory and reaches the target with a few metre’s accuracy.
