India witnesses spike in new Covid-19 cases with 42,015 infections; 3,998 deaths

New Delhi, Jul 21, 2021: India on Wednesday witnessed a spike in fresh Covid cases with 42,015 new infections, according to the Union Health Ministry data. The country also saw a jump in the number of fatalities and recorded 3,998 deaths in the last 24 hours.

 

According to the health ministry, India’s active caseload stood at 4,07,170 till 8 am on Wednesday. In the last 24 hours, active cases increased by 1,040.

Top five states which have registered maximum cases are Kerala with 16,848 cases, followed by Maharashtra with 9,389 cases, Andhra Pradesh with 2,498 cases, Odisha with 2,085 cases and Tamil Nadu with 1,904 cases.

77.89 per cent of the new cases are reported from these five states, with Kerala alone responsible for 40.1 per cent of the new cases.

Maximum casualties due to Covid-19 were reported in Maharashtra with 3,656 deaths, followed by Kerala with 104 daily fatalities.
A total of 36,977 patients recovered in the last 24 hours, which brings the total recoveries to 3,03,90,687 across the country.

The country’s recovery rate now stands at 97.36 per cent, the health ministry said.

India has administered a total of 34,25,446 doses in the last 24 hours, which brings the total tally of doses administered to 41,54,72,455.

A total of 18,52,140 samples were tested between Tuesday and Wednesday.
