India won’t accept shift in LAC, situation can spiral into larger conflict: CDS General Bipin

New Delhi, Nov 06, 2020:    As top military commanders of India and China meet for the 8th round of talks on Friday, Indian Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat warned against the "situation getting out of hand and spiralling into a larger conflict", making it clear that a "shift in the Line of Actual Control (LAC) is not acceptable to India".

 

"In the overall security calculus, a full scale conflict with China is low on probability, however, border confrontations, transgressions and unprovoked tactical military actions spiralling into a larger conflict cannot be discounted,” Gen Rawat said.

Speaking on the occasion of Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the National Defence College in New Delhi, which also has international participants, he said that as the situation remains tense along the LAC, Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is facing unanticipated consequences for its misadventure in Ladakh because of firm responses by Indian forces. The reference was to the six-month-long standoff that started in early May, and as the deadlock continues.

"Our posturing is unambiguous, the status quo has to be restored, and we will not accept any shift in Line of Actual Control," he said.

Even after the 7th round of Corps Commander-level talks, there has been no breakthrough in easing tensions. He also spoke about China’s continuous support to Pakistan. Speaking of security challenges, he highlighted the collusive threat that India faces from China and Pakistan.

"Pakistan has continued to be the epicentre of armed Islamist insurgency and terrorism. For three decades, Pakistan Army and ISI known as ’Deep State’ have been waging a proxy war in Jammu and Kashmir... Pakistan’s current economic crisis, its inability to come out of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list, rising religious and ethnic fundamentalism, and internal power struggles will push it further into instability in the foreseeable future," Gen Rawat said on Friday.
