New Delhi, Mar 30, 2024: The Indian Navy on Friday diverted two of its naval ships to intercept an Iranian fishing vessel, ‘Al Kambar’, in the Arabian Sea in response to a potential piracy attack. The vessel was reportedly hijacked on Friday evening. Upon receiving information about the potential piracy incident, the Indian Navy promptly redirected two of its ships, which were on a mission in the Arabian Sea for maritime security operations, to intercept the hijacked vessel.
At the time of the incident, the Iranian vessel was located approximately 90 Nautical Miles South West of Socotra and was reportedly boarded by nine armed pirates. The hijacked fishing vessel was successfully intercepted on March 29.
As per the latest updates, the Indian Navy is currently conducting an operation to rescue the hijacked fishing vessel and its crew. The Indian Navy has reiterated its commitment to ensuring maritime security in the region and the safety of seafarers, irrespective of their nationalities.
The Indian Navy has been actively involved in several high-stakes operations against piracy attacks recently. Earlier this month, in a daring operation, the Indian Navy intercepted the pirate ship Ruen, which was sailing almost 2600 km from the Indian Coast, and forced the pirate ship to halt through calculated actions.
During the rescue operation, which lasted over 40 hours, INS Kolkata successfully cornered and coerced all 35 pirates to surrender, ensuring the safe evacuation of 17 crew members from the pirate vessel without any injuries.
In another operation, the Indian Navy swiftly responded to a distress call from the Gulf of Aden where a merchant vessel had caught fire after being hit by a missile. The Navy rescued 21 crew members, including one Indian national.
Last month, in response to a distress call from a fishing vessel, an Indian Naval ship that was deployed in the North Arabian Sea for maritime security operations provided damage control assistance and undertook strengthening of the hull, rendering the boat safe for further transit.
