Chandigarh, Feb 06, 2018 : Capt Kapil Kundu, who was martyred in heavy Pakistani shelling along the LoC in J&K valley’s Rajouri district on Sunday, was planning to return home in his village Ransika in Gurugram in Haryana to celebrate his 23rd birthday on February 10.
The officer shared his plans with his sister and friends, asking them to keep this as a surprise for his mother. As destiny would have it, his body arrived in his village on Monday night, wrapped in a tricolour. The officer’s mother Sunita Kundu was inconsolable. Tragically, members of his family said it was on Capt
Kapil’s birthday few years ago that his father died.
Brave mother
A pall of gloom descended on the village. The villagers vouch for the young Captain’s bravery and indomitable spirit, which was clear from the martyr’s Facebook page where he wrote, "Life should be big instead of being long". Captain Kundu joined the Army after being selected to the National Defence Academy (NDA) in 2012. A tearful Sunita showed she was the mother of a brave son. "If I had another son, I would have sent him also to the Army. Had my son lived more years, he would have done more for his nation," she said.
His friends in the village said Capt Kundu was a good writer and wrote poetry eloquently. One of the martyr’s childhood friends said the poetry he shared with his friends revolved around mother and nationhood. "He was extremely fond of children. He used to come on short leave and spend most of his time playing games and cricket with village kids. Many wanted to be like him," his friend Sanjay said. The officer is survived by his two sisters and mother.
