New Delhi, Sep 29, 2014: Justice Handyala Lakshminarayanaswamy Dattu, who took charge as the 42nd Chief Justice of India on September 28, said that judges of the Supreme Court are sensitive enough to protect the interest of the common man as the apex court is their last hope for justice.
“All the judges are responsible enough to handle a case. We do give a lot of attention to the cases and spend nearly 16 hours of the day. When a citizen finds that his case is before us, he is given due attention as the Supreme Court is the last hope for him,” Justice Dattu said during an informal chat with media.
The 63-year-old senior most judge of the apex court, who hails from Chikmagalur district in Karnataka, was administered the oath of office in a brief ceremony by President Pranab Mukherjee earlier in the day.
Dressed in off-white “kurta pyjama”, Justice Dattu offered South Indian delicacies and filter coffee to his guests, including a number of judges and lawyers from the Karnataka High Court, at a tea party organised at his 10, Tees January Marg residence here. Even though he categorically refused to take questions from reporters, the CJI accepted that workload has increased tremendously and many sensitive cases were filed. Kannadigas do feel proud today.
